Superhero Fund Fare for Kids with Cancer, Leukemia, Lymphoma and Thalessemia...
Hello readers!

Regarding to the above title. I personally got a message from my cousie on 26th September 2012. Regarding to a fund raise that they are organizing on October. I've invited quite a lot of friends to join this event as well.

It was a charity fund raising event for kids with Cancer, Leukemia, Lymphoma and Thalessemia... It was held at Poise Organic Wellness Studio. Really grateful and thankful to everyone that participate and volunteers in this event. It was a very successful event. I'd enjoy myself at there on that day.

Here is a message from my cousin that invited me to join her at this event.

Dear Friends,

Many of us are blessed with healthy children, nephew or nieces. It is such a joy to be able to see them grow into beautiful individuals. We try our very best to care for all their needs whether it is their physical or developmental growth. We always give our very best to make sure they are healthy.

So it is heart breaking to know anyone who is struck with cancer especially children. According to National Cancer Registry (2003-2005), between 2-4% of our children was diagnosed and living with cancer. The commonest cancers that strike the children are leukemia  brain tumor and lymphoma. Many of these children have to go through challenging treatment in the hospitals. The suffering the little bodies have to endure will break anyone’s heart.

I am a palliative care physician and I am involved in caring for these children especially those who has failed their treatment. While I visited them in the daycare or ward, I try to bring some cheers and smile into their little faces. When I was visiting the daycare center in Pusat Perubatan University Malaya, I noticed there is a small corner where we can put in some life and cheers.

I envisioned this corner to be bright, colourful and cheerful. This will definitely bring some joy and happiness into the children’s heart. We can put some books and children’s furniture to make into a reading corner. I approached the specialist in the hospital and they agreed that we can start a small project to lighten up that corner.

As I have worked with Poise in the past fund rising, I approached Connie and Gillian to work together in this project. They immediately agreed as they love children too.

Attached are the photos I took in children oncology daycare unit in Pusat Perubatan University Malaya.

We are inviting you to join us to bring smile into the children’s face. Please be our partner in this fund raising event.

Thanking you from the bottom of our heart.

Sincerely yours,
Dr Felicia Chang
Palliative Care Physician

Yes! It's really heartbreaking when I heard about this news. They're so young, yet they're suffering and fighting against the pain. With any hesitation, I've promised to help out during the fund raising day.

Below are some of the information i get from wikipedia. It's just a rough info about cancer, leukemia, lymphoma and thalessemia.

Cancer
Known medically as a malignant neoplasm, is a broad group of various diseases, all involving unregulated cell growth. In cancer, cells divide and grow uncontrollably, forming malignant tumors, and invade nearby parts of the body. The cancer may also spread to more distant parts of the body through the lymphatic system or bloodstream. Not all tumors are cancerous. Benign tumors do not grow uncontrollably, do not invade neighboring tissues, and do not spread throughout the body. There are over 200 different known cancers that afflict humans.

Leukemia

Leukemia  or leukaemia is a type of cancer of the blood or bone marrow characterized by an abnormal increase of immature white blood cells called "blasts". Leukemia is a broad term covering a spectrum of diseases. In turn, it is part of the even broader group of diseases affecting the blood, bone marrow, and lymphoid system, which are all known as hematological neoplasms.
In 2000, approximately 256,000 children and adults around the world developed some form of leukemia, and 209,000 died from it. About 90% of all leukemias are diagnosed in adults.
You may obtain more info at here.

Lymphoma
Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphocytes, a type of cell that forms part of the immune system. Typically, lymphoma is present as a solid tumor of lymphoid cells. Treatment might involve chemotherapy and in some cases radiotherapy and/or bone marrow transplantation, and can be curable depending on the histology, type, and stage of the disease. These malignant cells often originate in lymph nodes, presenting as an enlargement of the node (a tumor). It can also affect other organs in which case it is referred to as extranodal lymphoma. Extranodal sites include the skin, brain, bowels and bone. Lymphomas are closely related to lymphoid leukemias, which also originate in lymphocytes but typically involve only circulating blood and the bone marrow (where blood cells are generated in a process termed haematopoesis) and do not usually form static tumors. There are many types of lymphomas, and in turn, lymphomas are a part of the broad group of diseases called hematological neoplasms.

Thalassemia
Thalassemia are forms of inherited autosomal recessive blood disorders that originated in theMediterranean region. In thalassemia, the disease is caused by the excessive destruction or degradation of red blood cells due to formation of abnormal hemoglobin molecules, because of a defect through a genetic mutation or deletion.
There are two major forms of the disease - alpha and beta (see below), which are prevalent in discrete geographical clusters around the world, where it is presumably associated with presence of malaria.
The alpha form is prevalent in peoples of Western African and South Asian descent. Nowadays, it is found in populations living in Africa, the Americas and also, in Tharu in the Terai region of Nepal and India. It is believed to account for much lower malaria sicknesses and deaths, accounting for the historic ability of Tharus to survive in areas with heavy malaria infestation, where others could not.
The beta form of thalassemia is particularly prevalent among Mediterranean peoples and this geographical association is responsible for its naming: Thalassa is the Greek word for sea and Haema is the Greek word for blood. In Europe, the highest concentrations of the disease are found in Greece, coastal regions in Turkey (particularly the Aegean Region such as IzmirBalikesirAydinMugla, and Mediterranean Region such as AntalyaAdanaMersin), in parts of Italy, particularly Southern Italy and the lower Po valley. The major Mediterranean islands (except the Balearics) such as SicilySardiniaMaltaCorsicaCyprus, and Crete are heavily affected in particular. Other Mediterranean people, as well as those in the vicinity of the Mediterranean, also have high rates of thalassemia, including people from West Asia and North Africa. Far from the Mediterranean,South Asians are also affected, with the world's highest concentration of carriers (16% of the population) being in the Maldives.
The thalassemia trait may confer a degree of protection against malaria, which is or was prevalent in the regions where the trait is common, thus conferring a selective survival advantage on carriers (known as heterozygous advantage), thus perpetuating the mutation. In that respect, the various thalassemias resemble another genetic disorder affecting hemoglobin, sickle-cell disease.

I've actually grabbed some images from the event page itself. Cause im not in the scene most of the time.. hehehe...
